Living in Arthur
The area we have come to know and love as the “Arthur Area” encompasses approximately a seven-mile radius of the Village of Arthur. The village has approximately 2,300 residents with an additional 4,500 Amish residents in the nearby countryside. Living in the Arthur Area provides you opportunities to experience a very quiet and calm approach to life. The area is clean and pristine where you can see the stars on a clear, cool night. The peacefulness of each day and evening is only broken by the comforting sound of horses clopping along pulling the buggies behind.
Each day we have approximately 1,500 people drive into the Arthur Area for their employment. With over 400 businesses located in our area, there are numerous opportunities to work and play in the Arthur Area. Our manufacturing base is the largest in two counties – Douglas and Moultrie – in the area. Our schools are some of the highest quality in central Illinois due to the diligence of the past and present administration and staff. Our school district is one of the largest, geographically, in the state of Illinois. Our parks enhance the overall experience our visitors enjoy when visiting the Arthur Area.
In addition to enjoying the clean, calm pace of life in the Arthur Area you are not far from the “big” cities of Indianapolis, Chicago and St. Louis. Each of these metropolitan areas may be reached with a 2 hour trip on the interstate.
We will plan to see you soon somewhere enjoying the peace and calm of the Arthur Area because it is truly a great place to call home.

The Arthur Community Unit School District #305 has experienced a great deal of “change” in the past 3 years. During the 2012-13 school year the voters of Douglas County, with leadership from each community/school, approved a 1% increase in the County Sales tax rate. These funds will begin to accumulate on January 1, 2014 and may be used for specific purposes and primarily focus upon construction & maintenance of facilities.
Commencing with the 2013-14 school year the Arthur School District annexed the Lovington School District. The major change was Lovington High School students began attending the Arthur High School, creating Arthur-Lovington High School, with Lovington keeping their K-8 school building.
In the spring of 2014, the Arthur-Lovington School Board voted to construct a ten-room addition to the current Arthur Elementary building to house the current 7th and 8th grade students now attending at the Arthur-Lovington High School building. This construction will permit the high school to accommodate the increase in student enrollment coming with the annexation of Atwood-Hammond students in 2014-15.
At the conclusion of the 2013-14 school year the current superintendent, Travis Wilson, will retire. The Arthur-Lovington School Board has hired Kenny Schwengel to become the next superintendent beginning on July 1, 2014.
During the 2014-15 school year the Arthur-Lovington School District will annex the Atwood-Hammond School District. The new name for the high school, as determined by the students, will be Arthur-Lovington-Atwood-Hammond High School.
The current (commencing with the 2014-15 school year) setup of school buildings, with attendance grade levels are as follows:
Atwood – K through 8 facility
Lovington – K through 8 facility
Arthur – K through 8 facility as well as a 9 through 12 high school facility.
